Curing Really Bad Brake Squeal

By David Mattison

Ok, to start off, I have suffered with the worst brake squeal after fitting Pagid pads and Brembo disks. When I went to visit Rog for my new exhaust he said they were the worst he’d heard, and I guess he’s heard a lot!

To start off, I assembled the tools shown here.

First off, I jacked up the car and removed the wheel.

I use a 4mm drill bit (flat end) and a hammer to get the pins out.

Then I used adjustable pliers to pull the pads back. I moved them back as far as possible, as when they go back in, they’ll be a fair bit wider.

Once back, they should pull out with ease.

Once out, I used white spirit to completely clean the pads. Then I lightly sanded them down to get good adhesion to the back of the pad.

I then stuck the sticky fibre shim to the back of the pad.

I then sprayed the entire back of the pad and shim with copper grease.

I then put the stainless shim on onto the back of the pad.

I then sprayed the back of the stainless shim.

Then using my finger, I applied some thick grease to the top and bottom guides of the callipers (black arrows).

I then refitted the pads (just) and reinserted the pins using a 10mm drill bit (flat end) and hammer.

Refit wheel.

Hope this helps anyone having the same problems as I was.
