Changing Rocker Cover Gasket on a 20VT

By David Mattison

Before you start, have a torx 40, and a 5mm hex ready. I used a torque wrench to undo the bolts and then a drill with adaptor to get the bolts out fully. You will also want the new gasket and O-rings ready. These are available from Alternative Autos for under £10. If you have not already replaced the fiat clip, you may also need a jubilee clip for the oil breather pipe.

To start, locate the 3 torx40 bolts holding the coil cover on. Remove the coil cover.

Next disconnect all the coil packs. This can be done by pressing the thin metal spring then pulling the connector of. Then bend all the wires  together out of the way of the rocker cover.

Now undo 2 the bolts holding each of the 5 coil packs and remove the coil packs to expose the spark plugs below.

You want to put everything you remove back into the same place that it went. To ensure this, I placed all the items I removed from the engine down according to where they came from. Then when it came to reassembly, I knew where everything went.

Now remove the oil breather pipe hose (1 below). For some this will just be slackening the Jubilee clip. For others you may have to butcher the Fiat clip first.

Remove the grounding wire (2). This requires a 5mm hex driver and on mine required a wrench.

Next undo pull te cable loom out of the plastic clip and undo the two 10mm bolts underneath.

Now remove all 12 of the torx bolts holding the rocker cover down. I started at the bottom left, and went along, then along the top, then finally the middle four. Not sure it makes any difference though.

When the bolts are all off, the rocker cover should be moveable. You can remove it by lifting from the left and sliding the right hand side out from under the induction pipe.

When I took off the engine, mine was very mucky, and there was oil where the gasket and O-rings met the head. I spend a bit of time tidying up the areas where the gaskets went.

You may want to check around, especially the four corners and on the left hand side where the engine rises up that there is no ‘gunk’ or old bits or gasket there. I used a cloth with a little turps to clean these areas. Don’t use any metal implement to ‘clean’ the cover, otherwise you may scratch the head.

Remove the old gasket and O-rings, then and put in the new ones.

Now do everything above backwards.

I also spent some time cleaning the rocker cover. I used wd40, then soap and water, then finished off with brake cleaner to ensure the cover was completely free of water.

Warning – if the local moggy decides to take a very close look at what you are up to, shoo it off before it gets its paws and hair in your open engine!
